2003

- Betwixt: Phase I - Poem V -

I came to town with stars in my eyes,

A kid with dreams too big to disguise

You sang in bars till the booze caught fire,

And I wrote of our love through a camera’s wire

The carpet was rolled out for my arrival,

Camera flashes took me out of the denial

My promised heart and Hollywood shine,

Contrasted with your melody of chords and signs

You live coffee and future dreams,

Chasing spotlights and the appraisal of the angsty teens

Under the gold and glitter, you’ll bleed,

Right until your name is spelled out for all to see

They’ll call us lucky, the chosen ones,

You're on an Eras tour, I’m on set directing guns

We’ll buy a big ol’ house somewhere,

And live our days without a fear or care

Could we have stayed in that one-bedroom place?

Where did we get our start and trace the age of fate?

Will life be cruel and drive us apart?

Because the stars misaligned and forgot to chart

The future came like a thunderclap,

With contracts signed along with a faded map

And the fear hangs like a curtain closing a door,

What if we don’t make it anymore?

What if one day we’re miles apart,

Both of us legends with a broken heart?

Still wearing rings that no one sees,

Engraved with “what if” memories

You’ll write a song about that one time in May,

I’ll film a scene with Charlie Day

And maybe in silence we’ll both agree,

We were lucky to both be born in 2003
