In My Dreams

- Rift: Part I - Poem IV -

In my dreams,

I imagine you're awake,

Lying next to me

The light in your new apartment spills onto the street,

And you're sitting by the window,

Wondering if you made the right choice,

To set me free

You’re probably worn out from the week,

Aching for someone to kiss you,

Lying in your bed where I used to sit,

And silence fills your walls,

Where I used to talk

And maybe you wonder if I still think of you, too

I do

But it takes everything in me,

Not to send you a text,

Not to write a paragraph just to erase it,

‘Cause I know you’ll leave me on read again,

And treat me like I was just a friend,

Then I’ll be reminded all over again,

How it felt to lose you

You probably think I’ve moved on,

Or worse, that I don’t care,

But I can’t survive another hello with you,

If it’s gonna end in goodbye

In my dreams,

Your hand is brushing my cheek,

Your voice is soft,

Asking me if we can try again,

And I’ll say yes,

A million times

But when I wake up in the cold morning,

Your good morning isn’t there, your call has hung up,

In the dark of my mind, I return to that window you look out of,

And to the version of us that still believes,

There’s another chance

In my dreams, I go back to how it was,

In my dreams,

I almost say I love you
