Severance
- Betwixt: Phase III - Poem IX -
Across the hush of Hubbard’s tide, I can’t stop thinking about how we used to sail,
Until that fateful day when you told me you thought we’d failed
The test of lovers that came to pass,
We both raised our only mast
Though the galaxies still spin and the stars go up at night,
I’d go through severance to meet you in every lifetime
The wolves of doubt can surround our tender minds,
Their teeth may tug at your sleeve, making your heart unwind
You might turn away from the sandcastle we made on the cleanest shore,
I’ll lean into the water and wait for you forevermore
The flowers I pick for you, they’ll wilt and fade,
Will your love remain evergreen and intertwine with your mother’s braids?
I’ve done it all right, but I know I’m not the best,
I’m sure of my capacity to love, but not my willingness to rest
You need to do the work to prove that you want to love me,
And make sure you change for both of us feel like we no longer desire to be free
So that when the towers crack and crumble and the stairs burn,
Our vow will outlive the ruins where all lesser ones adjourn
You can move far and retreat into your old ways,
But I’ll still be there where you asked me to be your mate
You can pretend I’m gone, like I never existed and was dead before you met me,
But that can erase the memory of our summer beneath the trees
So don’t forget I’m gonna wait here for you if you’re ready for my rhymes,
That tells you that even severance proves I’ll choose you in every lifetime
