Should’ve Been You
- Rift: Part II - Poem VI -
It’s not a lie, the truth is clear,
The fault was mine, I should’ve kept you near
I saw your tears, but turned away,
When all you needed was for me to stay
What hell did I bring to your door?
I should’ve loved you so much more
Instead, I let the cracks of doubt run deep,
And gave you promised words I couldn’t keep
I should’ve been the one to fight,
To hold you closer through the night
But I grew silent, made you fall,
When I should’ve given you my all
Your eyes once lit the darkest skies,
But they were blinded by my lies
I let you break, I watched you bend,
And never reached out to help you mend
The smile you wore was painted pain,
A mask you carried through the rain
And though you begged, I turned aside,
I should’ve stood right by your side
Now as the night consumes the day,
There’s nothing left that I can say
Our love was real, but I withdrew,
It should’ve been me, instead of you
